So, for those who don't know, Labor Day weekend is a big deal in New Orleans. For years, hordes of horny gay men have arrived for a weekend of debauchery and tea dances. In the past couple of years, there has been an effort to bring more women and trans folks out. Instead of my usual plan to get the hell out of town for the long, holiday weekend, I was conscripted to organize and participate in several events:
I'm tabling for the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans for the HRC Equality Bus Tour: http://www.hrc.org/roadtoequality/neworleans.html
I'll be reading from my novel at Esoterotica - the Decadence version! This one takes place at the AllWays Lounge, 8 pm, $3-5 suggested donation, all proceeds to benefit RAINN (Rape and Incest National Network) - http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=150276758381615
Immediately following the reading will be FASTER PUSSYCAT, a queer/trans kink & fetish dance party! Costumes and toys encouraged but not required-- I've got to figure out something that I can wear for the reading and still not be out of place at the after party! $5, 10 pm til...? http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=156080621132808
Friday, I'm tabling again at the HRC event and will probably go cool down afterward at the COUNTRY CLUB with discounted admission to the pool and drink specials! DJ JENNA JORDAN $5, 7 pm til...? http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=252930321394256
Saturday, I'll be joining the grrlz and bois of QUEERLESQUE!, burlesque by, for and about the queer community, to be shown new meanings to the word "decadent" at the AllWays Lounge at both 8 pm (nonsmoking) and 11 pm. DJ SONJA LOFTON bringing the beats before, between and after the shows. $10 http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=241375539227751
Sunday is when I get to enjoy some tea and cakes while helping facilitate a discussion of the life and works of GERTRUDE STEIN (including her recent portrayal by Kathy Bates) at the LGBT Community Center. 10 am http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=205269856196159
And, it being New Orleans, we can't end the festivities without a parade: I will be joining the Dykeadence krewe in the Southern Decadence PARADE! Costumes are encouraged and bubbles and glitter will be provided. Meet outside Tubby's Golden Lantern around 11 but you can join us anywhere along the route. Parade step off is at 2. Feel free to brings signs, handouts, throws, your phone number... http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=278829548800641
There are plenty of other events that I won't be attending--Check out http://dykeadence.com/ for some of the other fun things on tap.
